First, I worked with a Deep Learning algorithm to transform the silhouette of Istanbul, closer to the style of known paintings. Then, a deep learning system decided the position and color of each brush stroke on the canvas. Here in this video, we observe the AI algorithm putting on one brush stroke every frame.
Although I don't decide on each brush stroke, my design process in this artistic production is different because computationally expensive machine learning and artificial intelligence systems are involved. In this process of co-creation with the machine, an iteration takes much longer, and generating one draft artwork sometimes takes days. Hence, my process includes generating draft artworks in batches, which requires an intuition of selecting content that could work with certain AI models, anticipation of AI system outputs, and curation and selection of final artworks out of batches of many, many artworks.
This first serie was showcased on 52 public locations scattered around Istanbul, as a part of Istanbul The Lights festival, curated by Esra Özkan and Ayça Okay, and produced by Contemporary Istanbul Foundation, and the City of Istanbul.

The three content images that I used in the No.1 series are available at wikimedia commons, and these images have been released to public domain (CC0) by their authors. The style images are famous painting hosted in wikiart and these images are also in public domain (CC0). The video production used derivations of two Deep Learning algorithms. The style imitation combines two approaches of Leon A. Gatys, Alexander S. Ecker, Matthias Bethge 2016; Manuel Ruder, Alexey Dosovitskiy, Thomas Brox 2016. The iterative brush stroke generation is by Zhengxia Zou, Tianyang Shi, Shuang Qiu, Yi Yuan, Zhenwei Shi 2021. The music is generated using my own algorithm MASOM.

Istanbul Silüetleri sanat işlerimin 3. serisinde iki derin öğrenme (yapay zeka) algoritmasıyla görselleri üretirken başka bir yapay zeka sistemi kullanarak da bu görsellere müzik ekledim. Bu 3. seride bir derin öğrenme algoritması, fırça darbelerinin tuval üzerindeki konumuna karar veriyor. Ben tek tek fırça darbelerini tuvale koymasam da, bu işteki sanat yapım sürecim, çalışması saatler hatta günler süren makina öğrenmesi ve yapay zeka sistemleri içerdiği için, sanat işinin tasarım ve üretimi farklılaşıyor. Sanat işinin üretim süreçleri uzuyor, bazen bir örneği üretmek günler alabiliyor. Bu nedenle, örnek işleri partiler halinde üretiyorum, ve üretim sürecinde hangi derin öğrenme algoritmasının hangi görsel kompozisyon ile çalışabileceğinin bilgisi, yapay zeka sisteminin nasıl çıktılar verebileceğinin sezgisi, ve çıktıların arasından sanat işinin seçimi önem kazanıyor.
Istanbul The Lights festivali kapsamında bu sanat işim şehrin 52 kamuya açık noktasında sergilendi.
